Music surprising star of American Music Awards

Taylor Swift gets political at the American Music Awards after winning four fan-voted trophies; Cardi B and Migos celebrate each other on stage.

The American Music Awards happened today, and even though Taylor Swift slithered away with four awards including Artist Of The Year, the real victor of the night was Cardi B. "You know what else gets voted on by the people?".

"I always look at albums as chapters in my life, and to the fans, I'm so happy that this means that you like this one", Swift said during another acceptance speech.

She added that the awards represented "encouragement and motivation to be better and work harder".

"This award and every single award given out tonight were voted on by the people", said the singer.

On Sunday, Swift provoked a storm by breaking her silence on politics and announcing she would vote for two Democrats in Tennessee in the USA congressional midterm elections in November.

The singer racked up wins for favourite pop/rock album for "reputation", tour of the year, and artist of the year.

As the most nominated artist of the night, the Bronx rapper delivered an electrifying performance of her No. 1 smash "I Like It" with help from J Balvin and Bad Bunny.

She concluded her speech: "Thank you guys so much I appreciate it". With her wins for Best Tour, Best Pop/Rock Album and Artist of the Year, Taylor now has the most AMAs of any female artist - 22 in total!

Recently, Swift took to Instagram with a lengthy message about her political views.

Cardi B's collaboration with Bruno Mars, the remix of "Finesse", earned two nominations and she also earned a nod for favourite music video, among others.

Host Tracee Ellis Ross also showed her support for voting, wearing an "I Am A Voter" shirt.

Gladys Knight performs while an image of the late Aretha Franklin is projected on a screen during the 2018 American Music Awards on October 9, 2018, in Los Angeles. The show will also pay tribute to Aretha Franklin.
