James Gunn has closed a deal to write Suicide Squad 2 and will possibly direct as well, sources say.

Gunn directed the first two "Guardians of the Galaxy" movies, but was sacked from the franchise this summer due to the re-emergence of old, offensive tweets. Despite this, the Guardians of the Galaxy's main cast including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn and Bautista, who all still supported him and asked for Disney to reinstate Gunn as the film's director. Gunn was single-handedly responsible for making Guardians a premium brand for the MCU, despite a total lack of lack and his creative vision was enough to make Marvel Studios promote him to a higher position within the MCU's hierarchy to look at future opportunities.

DC's next Suicide Squad film does not yet have a release date.

"My words of almost a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative", Gunn wrote in a statement on Twitter.

James Gunn is back, and poised to oversee a marquee franchise.

He added: 'Regardless of how much time has passed, I understand and accept the business decisions taken today.

The cast of Guardians Of The Galaxy have defended Gunn since the tweets were unearthed. All I can do now, beyond offering my honest and heartfelt regret, is to be the best human being I can be: accepting, understanding, committed to equality, and far more thoughtful about my public statements and my obligations to our public discourse. Gunn produced the project with The H Collective.
