The 28-year-old pop singer won a record fourth artist of the year trophy at the fan-voted American Music Awards, beating rappers Drake and Post Malone, as well as Britain's Ed Sheeran and rock band Imagine Dragons for the top prize.

She added that the awards represented "encouragement and motivation to be better and work harder".

Her awards also led her to become the most decorated female artist at the AMAs, with 22 trophies. - The midterm elections of Nov 6. Additionally, several of gospel and R&B's heaviest hitters will assemble for what's sure to be a touching Aretha Franklin tribute.

DJ Khalid also gave a shout out Democratic Texas Senate candidate Beto O'Rourke when he won favorite male artist.

Her logic is sound: If fans can learn to vote for their favorite music videos, why can't they apply that same skill to politics? But the AMAs stand out: partly because the fans vote for the winners, but mostly because of the talent assembled for this extravaganza at L.A.'s Microsoft Theater, hosted by black-ish star Tracee Ellis Ross.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, New York rapper Cardi B, brought down the house with an exuberant performance of dance hit I Like It with J.Balvin and Bad Bunny.

"I am honored to accept this award on behalf of my son", she said. I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country.
