That's wife! Century maker Hafeez reveals Test return inspiration

Travis Head plays off the back foot

The 37-year-old, who was playing his 51st Test, frustrated Australia en route his 10th century before being trapped in front of the wicket by paceman Peter Siddle in the final session.

Finch, who played 93 one-day internationals for Australia before earning his first test cap, showed patience and restraint in accumulating 59 from 139 balls, including five boundaries and a six.

Howecer, Pakistan unleashed four overs from leg-spinner Yasir Shah and a combined three from off-spinners Mohammad Hafeez and Bilal Asif, but both Australian openers looked assured.

The pair frustrated the Australian attack with some solid batting as Pakistan reached 329-4 at lunch, with both in sight of centuries.

Australia named three debutants with batsmen Aaron Finch, Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne coming into the team for its first test since the ball-tampering incident at Newlands, South Africa in March that saw captain Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft receive lengthy bans for their part in trying to change the condition of the ball with a piece of sandpaper.

Usman Khawaja got to 85 before falling to Bilat Asif.

Past year he was included in Pakistan's squad for the two-match series against Sri Lanka, but did not feature as team management thought he was still not ready. Sohail was pleased to go on and post a big score after regularly making several promising starts before getting out earlier in the year.

"I could have been doing something else (had I retired)", said Hafeez after putting on a solid 205-run opening stand with Imam-ul-Haq who made a career best 76.

"I think the guys can take a lot from Sidds - the way he holds himself, the way he prepares for cricket games and especially Test match cricket", Haddin said.

"I am very happy after this hundred".

Pakistan will need seven more wickets while Australia require another 326 runs for an improbable victory to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series, with the second Test starting in Abu Dhabi on October 16. Mitchell Starc, Jon Holland and Marnus Labuschagne took one wicket each.

With a separate review into the culture of the men's team also set to land, Australia will be under plenty of scrutiny during the two-test series which finishes in Abu Dhabi.
