Tway wins Safeway Open playoff for first PGA Tour title

The title was decided at the 10th, Tway carding a three on the par-4 for the win.

Tway's father, Bob Tway, also secured his first victory in a playoff 32 years ago at Torrey Pines, making them the 10th father and son Tour winners.

Tway, the son of 1986 PGA Championship victor Bob, was in a three-way race for the title after going around in 71 in the final day and finishing on 14-under alongside compatriots Ryan Moore and Brandt Snedeker.

Tway had looked an unlikely victor earlier in the day as Snedeker increased his third-round lead from three shots to five during a solid front nine.

Snedeker had squandered a five-shot lead during the final round before being eliminated at the first extra hole at the Silverado Resort, Tway then sinking a 10-foot birdie at the third extra hole to beat Moore.

The 48-year-old Mickelson had surprisingly found form over the first two days, but he fell back in the third round with a two-over-par 74 that leaves him at eight-under.

"I'm kind of at a loss for words". "I played a really good front nine in tough conditions, made the turn and actually drove the ball really well, just hit some really, really poor iron shots". "I basically gave it away and it stinks right now, but I'll get over this and maybe it will help me down the road".

"I was just trying to put the ball in the fairway, which was very hard", Tway said.

Luke List jumped into that bunch with an eagle at 18 to cap his 67. Troy Merritt carded a 68, Sam Ryder and Australian Aaron Baddeley fired 69s and Web.com Tour graduate Im Sung-jae of South Korea posted a 71 to complete the group at 13-under.
