Kavanaugh to hear first arguments after bitter confirmation fight

In an interview with The Associated Press, McConnell disputed President Donald Trump's prediction that Alaskans "will never forgive" Murkowski and that she'll "never recover" politically after bucking her party on Kavanaugh.

The Alaska Republican Party is considering how it might reprimand Murkowski for her vote, but "leader" McConnell said Wednesday that there is no point in challenging Murkowski because "nobody's going to beat her".

She acknowledges that some voters are disappointed in her decision, but says that's unavoidable because Alaskans were split on whether Kavanaugh should be confirmed.

"Surely, they must have a better answer than snatching away one of the remaining options that some Americans still prefer to anything Democrats have been able to come up", Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said before the vote.

It also comes as campaign operatives assess whether the Kavanaugh battle will overshadow what has been shaping up as a voters' referendum on Trump, colored by candidates' views on health care and the economy. He has denied the allegations.

"We've seen a 500 percent increase in our fundraising at the end of the month as tensions have been boiling over in Washington and voters have started to pay attention", Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel explained on Fox News Tuesday.

In fact, the judge's contentious confirmation process - in which he was accused of an alleged sexual assault 36 years ago but nonetheless confirmed along partisan lines - has been weaponised by both sides.

The Republican party raised a total of $5.7 million from Sept. 30 to October 5, compared to $4.38 million raised by the DCCC from the end of September to October 5, which is the day Kavanaugh secured the votes in the Senate to be confirmed. He noted that Murkowski won election on write-in votes in 2010 and said, "She's about as strong as you can possibly be in Alaska".

So what is it about West Virginian voters that allows them to walk a line between support for Trump and support for Manchin and how did Manchin's vote for Kavanaugh affect their view of the Senator?

Trump supporters could not be happier, though happiness for them is often expressed as howling ire.

"I guess that's why she lost", Trump said when asked about Clinton's call to incivility.

McConnell wouldn't say whether the Senate would insist that Sessions' replacement would protect special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

A Democratic takeover of Congress could expose Trump to impeachment investigations and lead to multiple probes into his administration just as he prepares for his own re-election fight in 2020. "I'm proud she's in the Republican conference", he added.

Baldwin pointed to one plan sold in her state that she said does not cover hospital care on a Friday or Saturday.
