Lady Gaga co-writes powerful essay for World Mental Health Day

Mental health disorders are on the rise in every country in the world and could cost the global economy up to US$16 trillion (S$22 trillion) between 2010 and 2030 if a collective failure to respond is not addressed, according to a report. More shockingly, 60% of respondents believed that people with mental illness "should have their own groups to avoid contaminating healthy people" and 68% believe that they "should not be given any responsibility".

Chance, who recently pledged $1 million to mental health resources in his hometown of Chicago, wrote on Twitter that friends and family members need to realize that their expectations are unlikely to match the progress of their loved ones that are dealing with mental illness.

It also urged continuous training for primary healthcare workers to enable them detect and manage common mental health problems in community settings. The theme for this year is 'Young people and mental health in a changing world, ' while in 2017 it was 'Mental health in the workplace'.

"There are few greater examples than the injustices facing those with mental health conditions".

WHO, in its recommendations, called for the integration of mental health into primary healthcare.

Having good mental health can help us feel and function better, have more positive relationships with those around us, and deal with and manage hard times now and into the future.

The new strategy will be led by a head of medical health and guided by a mental health expert panel, which is expected to feature four psychiatrists and psychologists, all with experience of high-performance sport.

Depression was identified as the third leading cause of mental illnesses and disability among adolescents globally, while suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds. "It's time we should change the perception", adds Dr Desousa. "And we can give the mental wellbeing of our children the priority it so profoundly deserves".

Countries at the summit are expected to support a global declaration to achieve equity for mental health, marking the first time national governments have made a joint pledge to put mental health on an equal footing with physical health.

"The new Mental Health Strategy and the other measures we are promoting today demonstrate that our work in the area is consistently evolving and improving as we move forward".
