Mohammed Dewji kidnapped in Tanzania

Dar es Salaam special zone police commander Lazaro Mambosasa said security personnel around the county have been put on high alert in the hunt for the abductors.

A local daily in Tanzania says, Dewji was kidnapped on his way to the Oysterbay for routine gym exercise.

A taxi driver nearby said when Mr Dewji appeared, the vehicle parked inside flashed lights before the two white men alighted and seized him.

It is has not been established why the businessman, 43, was abducted.

"This kind of incident is new here", he added.

It is believed that the abductors had access to guarded hotel grounds because its gates were "believed to have been left open deliberately", suggesting that they may have had help from hotel staff. Mambosasa also revealed that several suspects, including hotel staff, were interviewed and multiple arrests have already been made.

Dewji, the owner and president of the multi-billion dollar revenue Mohammed Enterprises Tanzania Ltd (METL Group), was seized as he arrived for a morning workout at a luxury hotel in the country's commercial capital.

Eye witnesses said that the kidnappers who had their faces covered, shot in the air before they grabbed the businessman and took off with him.

According to Forbes, Dewji has amassed a fortune of $1.5 billion, making him the youngest billionaire on the African continent.

Police in Dar es Salaam are investigating the alleged kidnapping.
