Photos reveal devastation after supercharged Hurricane Michael slams Florida Panhandle

Panama City, some 20 miles (32km) from Mexico Beach, has borne the brunt of the storm, as it downed trees, knocked power lines, tore off roofs, and splintered homes, some of which have collapsed.

The massive storm is one of the most powerful hurricanes to ever hit the U.S. and the strongest in history to make landfall along the Florida Panhandle.

Michael benefited from deep pockets of warm water in the Gulf, which meant that even as the storm stirred the water it crossed, it wasn't churning up cool water that could sap its strength, said Bryan Norcross, a hurricane specialist with WPLG, a TV station in South Florida.

"We're going to see a lot of wind damage", Long said, and some residents could expect not to have power restored for weeks.

As the Category 4 storm's center crossed nearby, Mulligan said, the concrete building shook and vibrated against sustained winds around 155 miles per hour. "We didn't think it was going to be this bad".

Category 4 Hurricane Michael is set to slam into the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday. Downgraded to a tropical storm early Thursday over south Georgia, it continued to weaken overnight but was still menacing the Southeast with heavy rains, blustery winds and possible spinoff tornadoes.

"It is extremely emotional", she said, fighting tears.

As the storm continues on a northeast path, it is expected to hit Georgia and the Carolinas, the latter of which is still recovering from the devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Florence last month.

The WaterSound Beach Club near Panama City Beach is also sharing a live-cam view of crashing waves and rain.

"If you and your family made it through the storm safely, the worst thing you could do now is act foolishly", he said.

When Michael smashed into the coastline yesterday, debris was strewn across miles of Florida's coastline.

The National Weather Service office in the state capital Tallahassee issued a dramatic appeal for people to comply with evacuation orders. "Do not risk your life, leave NOW if you were told to do so", it said.

"This happened so quickly", he said.

Trump declared a state of emergency for the entire state of Florida, freeing up federal assistance to supplement state and local disaster responses.

Up to 12 inches of rain could fall in Florida's Panhandle and Big Bend areas, as well as southeastern Alabama and southern Georgia.

Past year saw a string of catastrophic storms batter the western Atlantic - including Irma, Maria and Harvey, which caused a record-equaling $125 billion in damage when it flooded the Houston metropolitan area. The most likely cause for such sudden changes?

More than 17,000 people tuned into the broadcast, including Sen.

Footage shared at around 4pm showed the wind speeds had dropped to 140mph, with a central pressure of 927 MB, but it remained a "very powerful hurricane".

Characterized by strong winds and heavy rainfall, the hurricane of 1930 caused severe damage to the Dominican Republic.
