Apple Original Shows Will Be Free for Apple Device Users

Until recently, it had been lumped in the same speculative basket as Apple HDTVs and Apple self-driving cars. If people want to watch other content through Apple's video service, such as content from HBO, they will need to pay for a subscription service.

Apple now has at least 24 original shows or movies in production, including content from Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, J. J. Abrams, and M. Night Shyamalan. As usual, Apple's mobile software is very rapidly adopted by consumers who own its products, in a stark contrast to Android, where an update needs to go through the company making the specific phone you have after it's been released by Google for its devices (which aren't selling in high enough numbers to make an impact in the charts).

Determined to become a TV titan alongside the likes of Netflix and YouTube, Apple is developing a new video service that will combine original content and existing third-party subscription services, according to reports by CNBC. You won't have to open that service's individual app separately.

The report further claimed that Apple is looking for tent-pole PG-rated shows. The tech company is expected to spend about $1 billion on original content this year with an eye towards creating shows that are geared towards wide family audiences.

The new version of the "TV" app is still in the works, and it won't be released until sometime early next year, but Apple hasn't confirmed these plans just yet.

There's no word on whether access will be provided to non-iOS users. This combined streaming platform would live in the TV application that's already installed on iOS and Apple TV devices.

If Apple can find the next Stranger Things or Game Of Thrones, this service could have a real shot at supplanting Netflix in the lounge room - particularly if it provides access to the best content from rival streaming giants.
