Gunn is also in consideration to direct the sequel to the 2016 movie about super villains forced to work for the USA government, according to the report.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the filmmaker was contacted by DC Films and Warner work on the sequel to Suicide Squad.

The first Suicide Squad film, which was released in 2016 and directed by David Ayer, received mixed reviews, but did earn almost $750 million worldwide - massive in comparison to its $175 million budget, before promotion and advertising.

Disney's move wasn't well-received by the Guardians cast, which came together to sign onto a letter asking that Gunn be reinstated.

When 2016's original Suicide Squad brought in more than $745 million at the worldwide box office, a sequel seemed like a sure thing.

The studio had earlier roped in The Accountant helmer Gavin O'Connor to direct the film but he is no longer attached to the project.

Stay tuned for details about Gunn's potential Suicide Squad film. But it also looked like O'Connor was moving on to reteam with Ben Affleck on the sports drama The Has-Been.

Who stars in Suicide Squad 2?

Remember when Disney fired Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn for some inappropriate tweets he made years before the company hired him?

From Marvel to DC?

He continued: "Yeah it was a big fun silly movie". Nothing but originality from this guy.

Disney-Marvel is still reportedly using Gunn's script for Guardians of the Galaxy 3, though no director has been chosen (some have suggested online they would balk at taking it over out of respect for Gunn). And now that Gunn appears to be headed to the Distinguished Competition to helm Warner Bros.' Suicide Squad franchise (either making a sequel or a separate, new take on the material), Bautista wants to follow him.

However, those rumours have been quashed with the recent announcement that Gunn has signed on as a writer, and potential director, for Suicide Squad 2.
