The unlikely allies spoke to reporters before a closed-door lunch that had been billed as a forum to discuss policy issues including manufacturing, gangs, prison reform and violence in Chicago, where West grew up.

The 41-year old rapper was at his most bombastic, as he wore a MAGA hat to the White House on Thursday, where he was personally received by US President Donald Trump, who gave him a hug.

He delivered a ten-minute speech in the Oval Office in front of Trump and the press and was so intense about it that even the President looked speechless and quite intimidated.

The rapper, who has broken ranks with much of the left-leaning entertainment industry to come out in support of Trump, even said he could be president himself - but "only after" Trump in 2024.

"There was something about when I put this hat on it made me feel like Superman", he said, addressing Mr Trump.

West said he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, but then that he was misdiagnosed, and was simply sleep-deprived. "And we have to make our core be empowered, we have to bring jobs into America". In December 2016, West was one of the many faces to appear at Trump Tower in New York City for an audience with the president-elect.

But West, who's from Chicago, tells Trump that this strategy is detrimental. "This hat gives me power in a way", the rapper and entertainer said.

The meeting had been billed by the White House as one centered on urban revitalization, workforce training, African-American unemployment, potential future clemencies and crime in Chicago. Thank you Kanye for your support.

Both Brown and West have been vocal supporters of the president.

The segment prompted other journalists and Donald Trump Jr to hit out at the network for airing what they say are racist remarks and insensitive to mental health sufferers. Wearing a red "Make America Great Again" hat, he repeatedly complimented Trump, who nodded in agreement.

Mr Trump said that "stop-and-frisk works". "She's a terrific woman". I've been watching her a lot. And that's covering a lot of people. That's one thing, I've never stepped into a situation where I didn't make people more money. And there's no reason for it. Police officers are just like us, he said.

On the menu for Thursday's lunch is caprese salad with balsamic glaze, roasted chicken with fingerling potatoes, and sautéed asparagus.
