Instagram Employs Machine Learning to Stop Bullying

Instagram is rolling out anti-bullying features

They are using a machine learning technology which would proactively detect bullying in the captions or the photos and will be sent directly to the community operations team to review.

Instagram announced on its official blog Tuesday that it will be using machine learning to combat bullying on the platform.

Instagram is also introducing a new filter, called the "kindness camera", to help spread positivity on the platform.

According to the reports, users have already learned to bypass the text filter on Instagram by posting a photo they tend to bully or harass or other such negative purposes, however, after this feature is rolled out completely, it will block off the bullying-related content completely. When encountering such instances, the AI technology will detect the photos and won't act as an executioner but instead, it will forward such uploads to the human reviewers who will review and flag the photos and videos as appropriate or inappropriate.

In honor of National Bullying Prevention month in the US, Instagram has unveiled its latest AI features that aims to help tackle cyberbullying by scanning posted content.

The tool - according to the company - will be more beneficial in removing bullying.

Mosseri was named Instagram's chief last week following the exit of co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger.

The feature is expected to roll across the social globe in just a few weeks.

Additionally, the platform is expanding its bullying comment filter to hide crude comments from the Feed, Explore, and Profile tabs, as well as live videos (above)-"to ensure that Live remains a safe and fun place to authentically connect with your friends and interests", Mosseri wrote.

One can get the camera effect automatically by following Maddie.

When you select the effect in selfie mode, hearts will fill the screen, and you'll be encouraged to tag a friend. And on switching to rear camera, you will see an overlay with kind comments in various languages. The technology that enables such detection was surveyed a year ago by Wired, which highlighted the company's inner attempts at machine-learning comment filters.
