Steve Stricker is expected to be the American captain in his native Wisconsin, where he'll need the U.S. players to be pulling for each other better than appeared to be the case in their 17½-10½ hammering in the suburbs of Paris. "We've got to let these 12 players enjoy this Ryder Cup and what was 2018 in Paris before we start looking forward to Whistling Straits".

The candidatures of Paul Lawrie and Miguel Angel Jimenez will at least make it some sort of conversation, although nobody expects anything other than Harrington to be announced as the third Irish captain in four matches.

"He is the right age and he's still in touch with the players because he's still playing out here", Westwood added.

As for Harrington's captaincy credentials, Bjorn added: "I've always said when you've got somebody that's a three-time major champion and has the pedigree that Padraig has and holds the respect of the players that he does, it would be hard to see him not doing it at some stage". The 47-year-old has served as a vice-captain in the last three Cups and his status in the game as a multiple major victor can not be doubted. He's won a major championship there.

Bjorn is one of five people charged with making the decision on the next European captain, and he has given his public backing for an unprecedented double announcement of Harrington and Westwood in the new year.

"I just think Padraig is the better candidate for the next one than me, and we need to pick the best man for the job".

"So, it looks like Padraig will be the captain but then you never know as someone else may step forward". "I've always thought Padraig would be a good captain in the United States". "He's won a lot of golf tournaments over there, he's won a PGA Championship. But on balance yes, I want to be a Ryder Cup captain at some stage". The Englishman has said he would like to captain Europe in Italy in 2022 when Rome hosts the event.

"I would say a three times major champion, clearly a European legend, for me Padraig is the frontrunner", Rose, who reached world number one this year and is now second in the rankings, told Sky Sports television on Tuesday. "That would be great, I'd very keen on doing it there [in 2022]".
