The answer to increasing well being and mental health will come not only from policy change in the house of commons, not only in the curriculum at school or college, but in the way we all relate to each other, the way we interact and support each other.

Recognising that accountancy lends itself to being a more stressful profession than others because of its longer working hours, firms are getting on board by introducing initiatives around mental health and wellbeing in the workplace. "It is time to do the same for mental health".

The number of health experts like the psychologists and therapists in our country is way less than the number of patients present.

Dr Kaluwa made the call on Monday at a press launch of the 2018 Mental Health Week, which was organised by the Mental Health Authority (MHA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and WHO, in Accra.

The Lancet Commission on Global Mental Health and Sustainable Development urged high income countries such as the United Kingdom to spend 10% of their health care budget on mental health.

So what have we learnt in this brief look at young people's mental health interventions? This study found that children aged 8-12 years who have parents with a diagnosed mental health or substance use disorder had fewer negative thoughts and beliefs and were more likely to seek support after taking part in an 8-week support group program of sessions that taught social skills and how to cope with hard situations.

Half of all mental illness, as we know, begins by the age of 14 - and with young people spending more time online, the strains on mental wellbeing are only going to increase. In terms of the burden of diseases among adolescents, depression comes third.

Around 4,500 people take their lives every year in England and suicide remains the leading cause of death among men under the age of 45. Communicate that mental health issues are as valid as physical illness and can be used as a reason for absence.

Those interested can take action by educating themselves about mental health and recognize the signs of mental health issues.

She described Wednesday's event as a way to give "highlight to mental health issues and a way to give highlight to issues that are affecting youth and how they can get help" because too often people are unaware that help is available.
