Knicks officially waive Joakim Noah, still owe former All-Star $38 million

The New York Knicks have waived Joakim Noah, ending his disappointing stint after just two seasons.

According to a report from ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Ian Begley, shortly before the news was officially announced, Noah had been resistant to a buyout because there are no teams expected to add him to their rosters.

The Knicks eventually confirmed the news via their PR team's Twitter account. Almost everyone predicted that the Knicks giving an injury-prone Noah a four-year, $72M deal when he was already 31 years old would be a mistake.

In the two seasons since, Noah has played in only 53 games with the Knicks, posting averages of 4.6 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. They will be playing Noah $6.4 million a year until 2022, however.

He appeared in just seven games with the Knicks last season, coming off the bench.

When he became a free agent after the 2015-16 season, he chose to sign with his hometown Knicks, spurning other offers. The Knicks had already decided he wouldn't rejoin the club under new coach David Fizdale but were hoping they could find a long shot trade to get something back for him without having to cut him.
