Palm is back (sort of), and it built a tiny smartphone sidekick

Now that phones are half a foot long and sell for more than $1,000, a San Francisco-based upstart says it's time for a smaller companion phone with a throwback name: Palm. In an age of giant screen phablets as the new standard, Palm's approach is different - it's created to be a second phone, with a 3.3-inch LCD display packing a high-res 445 ppi. It's Verizon exclusive in the United States and costs $350 (or approx Rs 25,835).

This Palm is a 3.3-inch device that is less standalone phone, more companion gadget to your existing smartphone. However, it is only today that the intention has turned into a reality in the form of a phone that is simply called the Palm. It's got a Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 processor inside that's mated to 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. There are caveats, too, because things like iMessage won't work and if you want to have messages on both devices, and you will have to use Verizon's own messaging app if you want to have everything sync. There's one USB-C port for charging or headphones, plus Bluetooth 4.2 low energy.

It has a special "life mode" that silences incoming calls and notifications every time the screen is off, unless users are on a call, streaming music or using Global Positioning System. It comes with IP68 water and dust resistance rating, sports a crafted billet aluminium mid-frame, and has a dual-purpose speaker. Palm Ventures' co-founders, Nuk and Dennis Miloseski, have backgrounds in mobile and design and previously worked at Samsung Electronics Co. "The product should be a supporting character in our lives". And it's working: on average, people check their smart phone every 15 minutes. If you think about it, your phone works like a slot machine, in the sense that you pull the lever and are excited by the prospect of what you could get. It runs on Android Oreo 8.1, and it can install any Android app you want. "Palm died at HP after a short run of tablets and smartphones, and eventually Chinese smartphone company TCL snatched up the rights to the Palm brand in 2014, and things have been quiet since then".

It's a 3.3-inch Android sidekick. I don't particularly care for the brand either because it was one of those "before my time" companies that I never really built a connection with, and I thought that it would stay that way when Palm eventually died.

I'm interested, but only for the name Palm. Sensors onboard the phone include accelerometer, electronic compass, gyroscope, and proximity sensor.
