Ford Is Making Another 350 GT Supercars To Satisfy Incredible Demand

It now says it will build 1,350 vehicles through 2022. Today the automaker announced it would extend that production run to "make ownership dreams a reality" for fans of the supercar. "By extending the Ford GT production run for a limited period, we're able to maintain the exclusivity of the ultra-desirable supercar while offering the ownership experience to a greater number of customers", said Hermann Salenbauch, Ford Performance director.

Ford Performance boss Hermann Salenbauch says this increase will "maintain the exclusivity of the ultra-desirable supercar while offering the ownership experience to a greater number of customers in addition to the 80 Ford GT owners in Europe who've taken delivery of their bespoke vehicle to-date".

The added production may indeed make new dreams come true for buyers, but only for a select few.

Applications will be open for 30 days, and the lucky folks picked to own a GT will likely fit in the same categories the first round of owners did-by which we mean they'll have to have a considerable social media presence and act as ambassadors for the brand.

The market's thirst for the 216 miles per hour coupe was revealed in recent months when two made their way to auction blocks - despite their original owners signing agreements not to sell them during the first two years of ownership - and were sold for between $1.3 million and $1.8 million each. The original planned run was 1,000 cars through 2020.

The new Ford GT is the quickest and fastest Ford ever, but is it really worth half a million bucks? However, only 138 were actually completed through the first year.

Applicants, according to Ford, will work with the Ford GT concierge service to spec out the cars that will be produced from 2020 to 2022. To assemble the GT, Ford contracted supplier Multimatic, which rolls out 250 cars per year.

When Ford opened up applications for people who wanted to buy the new GT supercar, it received an overwhelming 6,500 entries.

Production of the Ford GT - powered by a twin-turbocharged, 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine and featuring a carbon fiber architecture, active aerodynamics and 216 miles per hour top speed - began in December 2016.
