Red Dead Redemption 2

There has been much talk about the working conditions Rockstar put their employee's under, and now a former employee for the developer has come forward and voiced his experience.

Seeming to wear it as a badge of honour, Rockstar's Dan Houser caused quite the stir when he said "We were working 100 hour weeks" on several occasions during 2018 to push and complete Red Dead Redemption 2. Job J Stauffer, the co-founder of Orpheus Self-Care Entertainment spoke out about his experience of working at Rockstar Studios, he said "It's been almost a decade since I parted from Rockstar, but I can assure you that during the GTA IV era, it was like working with a gun to your head 7 days a week". However, the number speaks for itself: someone working a 100-hour week would be putting in about 14 hours per day, seven days a week without time off.

Houser quickly issued a clarification to Kotaku, writing that it was only himself and three other people in the senior writing team who were working those hours, and only for three weeks. "Three weeks, not years", Houser told the Verge.

The stories were common to many companies in the industry, especially 10 or so years ago, but Rockstar has always placed strict restrictions on what its developers can say on Twitter, so it's been hard to verify how much things have changed.

'More importantly, we obviously don't expect anyone else to work this way. No one, senior or junior, is ever forced to work hard. "But that additional effort is a choice, and we don't ask or expect anyone to work anything like this". I believe we go to great lengths to run a business that cares about its people, and to make the company a great place for them to work'.

What seems to be Japanese packaging for Red Dead Redemption 2 has appeared online and, if genuine, it shows that the PS4 physical edition of Red Dead Redemption 2 is spread across 2 discs.
