Sensor failure led to Soyuz launch failure, says Roscosmos

The Soyuz-FG rocket carrying a NASA astronaut and his Russian crewmate failed two minutes into the October 11 flight, sending their emergency capsule into a sharp fall back to Earth.

Although the official report on the cause of a Soyuz rocket failure won't be released until Thursday, a Russian official disclosed its central conclusion a day early, the country's news agency TASS reports.

Russian space officials say they hope to resume sending crews to the International Space Station on December 3 after an October launch failed because of a technical malfunction.

Last week, Russian Federation successfully launched a Soyuz rocket for the first time since the failure.

Russia's space agency says an investigation has found that a rocket carrying a crew to the International Space Station failed recently because of a technical malfunction of a sensor.

The Russian Soyuz spacecraft is now the only vehicle for ferrying crews to the International Space Station after the USA space shuttle fleet retired.

Russian Federation hopes to launch three crew for the International Space Station on December 3, the first manned blast-off since an accident this month, the Roscosmos space agency said Wednesday.

Aboard the next manned spacecraft will be Canadian David Saint-Jacques, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko and NASA astronaut Anne McClain, Agence France-Presse reported.

The crew is set to include Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques, who was originally scheduled to fly to the station December 20 on a six-month mission.

Meanwhile, an unmanned Progress cargo ship will blast off to the ISS on November 16 after its launch was postponed from October 30 due to the accident investigation, Krikalyov said. As a result, one of the side-mounted rocket boosters did not separate properly from the vehicle and collided with the rocket.

Sergei Krikalev, the executive director of "manned programs" for Russia's space corporation, Roscosmos, said a sensor on board the rocket failed to properly signal the separation of the first and second stages.

The Soyuz rocket used to launch astronauts has three stages, or segments.
