UNDER-FIRE preacher Walter Magaya has issued an apology for "rushed" claims he had discovered a cure for HIV/Aids, telling a joint media briefing with the Health Ministry Thursday that he made the announcement out of "excitement".

The office of a Zimbabwean preacher, Walter Magaya, who claimed to have discovered the cure for HIV/AIDS has been raided by police.

"At the same time, I carry a very important apology to the ministry, to the public at large and all organisations", he said.

This was after the Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries founder had just been released from the Harare magistrates' court holding cells soon after paying bail.

Magaya announced after a church service on Sunday in Harare that the drug was a supplement that could boost immunity and cure HIV, according the state-run Herald.

Speaking at the same occasion, Health and Child Care Minister Dr Obadiah Moyo applauded Prophet Magaya's decision to retract his claims.

"I took heed of what government and relevant boards have asked me to do to retract my earlier claim, which I am now doing", he said. "Together we are going to work towards running intensive clinical trials for Aguma".

Magaya said he got convinced he had found the elusive cure for HIV/Aids when it got tested in India but denied ever testing it on any individual in Zimbabwe.

"I have tested Aguma fully on human beings and in 14 days they have been cured", Magaya was quoted as saying. "This is done prior to registration and the results are submitted to the medicines regulator as evidence of the effectiveness of a medicine", said Minister Mutsvangwa.

"We want to continue emphasising to the population that whatever ARVs that you are on, please carry on taking them".

He revealed that Prophet Magaya assured Government that he will not dispense any of his products. "Zimbabwe appreciate new discoveries but we want them to go through scientifically proven processes and these processes are what we are following now".

"It is not our responsibility to thwart anyone's ideas or discoveries. We have been using herbal concoctions from other countries".
