Here’s how teal pumpkins help kids with food allergies on Halloween

FARE's Teal Pumpkin Project promotes safety and inclusion for all trick-or-treaters by encouraging people to provide non-food treats on Halloween.

Victoria City Hall is among other cities in North American taking part in the "Teal Pumpkin Project". But people with food allergies may be hoping some of those pumpkins are painted teal. You can also list your home on their interactive map showing households that are participating.

"There are unfortunately kids that die every year from these type of allergies so it can be deadly, it's not something to be taken lightly", he said.

If you would like to participate, paint a pumpkin teal or buy a teal pumpkin from a craft store and place it in front of your home to let trick-or-treaters with food allergies know that non-food treats are available there.

"It might be a very simple gesture", says Nancy Gregory with Food Allergy Research and Education, an organization supporting the project.

For most kids Halloween is about costumes and candy, but kids with allergies have fewer options and the holiday can be a tricky time for them and their parents. According to Gregory, one in 13 kids in America have a food allergy that could be life threatening. "I saw that you have a teal pumpkin, I'm here for the non-food treats, 'you can pull that out that bowl for that child".

Kolaszewski also said it's about making sure all kids feel included.
