According to the state health officials, previous year was one of the worst on record with almost 400 people dying during flu season in North Carolina.

During the flu season the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) produces a Weekly Influenza Report for clinicians. While elderly and very young people are the most susceptible to having the flu turn into something more serious, college students are in a unique situation that puts them at risk as well.

The vaccine is also available at no charge for clients of long-term care facilities in interim or transitional care beds, respite care clients and new, unimmunized residents admitted during the flu season. Almost 400 people died in North Carolina during the last flu season.

Last year, in Lincoln County, 42 residents were hospitalized due to the flu. But they increase when temperatures drop and the virus becomes more active.

The numbers are all the more impressive when considering last year's flu season was the worst since the H1N1 outbreak in 2009-10, the minister said.

With the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now including the nasal spray flu vaccine as one of the recommended forms of the annual vaccine, the American Academy of Pediatrics recently announced that it still recommends the flu shot over the spray for children.

The school kids were mostly suffering from influenza these days and their parents should take it seriously and ensure their proper treatment before sending them to school to avoid spread of this viral infection which can really catch the other kids having less immunity, he said.

Anyone who thinks they have the flu should contact their doctor right away to see if they need treatment with a prescription antiviral drug, such as Tamiflu. At best, a flu vaccine will have a 60% efficacy at reducing the risk of illness.

If these preclinical findings translate into humans, the approach may be a powerful tool to fight flu in vulnerable populations now not covered by traditional vaccination.

Some people are at higher risk of flu-related complications, such as pneumonia, hospitalization and death.
