NASA's Dawn Asteroid Mission Ends as Fuel Runs Out

July 1, 2016, the NASA management chose to leave the probe in orbit of Ceres, although the leadership of the mission, Dawn is assumed to use residual fuel spacecraft for flight to the asteroid of adeon.

At the point when the spacecraft missed scheduled communications with NASA's Deep Space Network on Wednesday and Thursday, the space agency formally proclaimed it dead.

"The astounding images and data that Dawn collected from Vesta and Ceres are critical to understanding the history and evolution of our solar system", said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington.

Launched 27 September 2007, the Dawn machine was created to study the asteroid Vesta and the dwarf planet Ceres.

This photo of Ceres and the bright regions of Occator Crater was one of the last views NASA's Dawn spacecraft transmitted before it completed its mission.

"The fact that my car's license plate reads "my other vehicle is in the asteroid belt" shows how proud I am of Dawn", said Dawn mission's director and chief engineer Marc Rayman.

The unmanned rocket has voyage 4.3 billion miles (6.9 billion kilometers) since launched in 2007. Now, an announcement from NASA confirms what we've been expecting for a few months: Dawn has run out of fuel, and the mission is finally over. "It's hard to say goodbye to this incredible spacecraft, but it's time", he added. Before joining Sun Star Times Andy has written for NPR, Motherboard, MSN and the Huffington Post.

This is the second time that NASA bade farewell to a spacecraft this week.

Vesta probably formed in the inner solar system and stayed between Mars and Jupiter, and it evolved just like the other rocky planets there.

Dawn also reinforced the idea that dwarf planets could have hosted oceans over a significant part of their history - and potentially still do.

Dawn should remain in orbit around Ceres for decades, according to NASA.

"In many ways, Dawn's legacy is just beginning", said Dawn's principal investigator Carol Raymond.

Before arriving to Ceres, the spacecraft had recorded details about new phenomena that challenged everything we know about these dwarf planets.

The samples will help the NASA scientists better understand the origins of the Solar System, the forces that shape the paths of asteroids through space and perhaps reveal some important information about the possible resources we could find on asteroids. Detailed readings from Dawn's suite of four science instruments led scientists to conclude that the spots were deposits of sodium carbonate, pushed up from the dwarf planet's interior.
