Pahlaj Nihalani Moves Court Against Censor Board's Cuts For His Film

"How can the CBFC follow up whether a film actually releases on the day given on the affidavit?" Nihalani has also sought the appointment of a committee to see the film and forward their suggestions to the court. The CBFC wants a dialogue that refers to Ram cut, Nihalani said, because of the upcoming 2019 elections, for which a Ram temple in Ayodhya will be on the election agenda. Soon after being replaced as chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) by Prasoon Joshi in August 2017, Pahlaj Nihalani grabbed headlines with his decision to present Deepak Shivdasani's "bold, attractive and blessed" Julie 2, which featured actress Raai Laxmi as a simple girl rising to be a superstar.

In May this year, after team Rangeela Raja shot for a dance sequence, Pahlaj Nihalani told IANS, "The entire look, feel, appearance and rhythm of the song sequence is based on the Kingfisher calendars". When I was the chairperson (at the CBFC) I left a lot of people angry and upset with me. "However, Prasoon Joshi who is good friends with Aamir Khan, gave preference to his movie before my film", Nihalani told ANI. But the current chairperson (Prasoon Joshi) is out of the country. Pahlaj is at pains to point out that there is no double meaning inherent in the line. Now when my film has been submitted for censoring, they are taking out their frustrations on me. Still I've been asked to delete a massive number of dialogues and scenes. "This is injustice. I will not take such drastic cuts", he thundered. "Movies like Anurag Kashyap's Manmarziyan are filled with kissing and lovemaking scenes and yet passed with a 'UA". But he can't bully me into cutting harmless scenes just because I was once in his chair and favouring no one.

Pahlaj Nihalani filed a plea in the Bombay High Court against the Censor Board on Monday after it reportedly suggested around 20 cuts in Rangeela Raja, directed by him, ANI earlier reported. I was going to release my film on Nov 8.

Interestingly, during his tenure as the board chief, Nihalani was himself notorious for compelling film makers to edit, mute and shorten dialogues and scenes which he found inappropriate for universal viewing. It is scheduled to hit the big screens on November 16.
