Trump makes final push in battleground states as midterm election nears

ATLANTA GEORGIA- Former President Barack Obama speaks to a crowd of thousands at Morehouse College as he campaigns for Democratic nominee for Georgia Governor Stacey Abrams in Atlanta Georgia Friday

Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is spending $5m on ads on the eve of the midterms that feature him speaking straight to the camera to urge moderate voters to support Democrats in the midterms.

And well do we remember 2016 when switching out Obama for Donald Trump by itself constituted the ultimate wave election. She lashed a sign to her front porch reading "VOTE FOR GUN CONTROL", and she is stunned every time she sees the crowd at Trump rallies on television cheering for his divisive language.

Democrats face a far more hard challenge in the Senate, where they are nearly exclusively on defense in rural states where Trump remains popular.

Just 3 percent of the 631 respondents said they were undecided. "That was a surprise".

In northern Virginia on Monday, Obama said "how we conduct ourselves in public life is on the ballot", a lightly veiled criticism of Trump and some prominent Republican candidates.

"Recent polling points towards a divided Congress, with the GOP predicted to maintain a slim majority in the Senate while the Democrats look likely to take the House".

The Georgia race has garnered attention from a list of high-profile backers, including Oprah Winfrey, who campaigned for Abrams last week. "Deplorable is adorable", read a T-shirt worn by a Trump supporter at his rally.

Much of this will not be resolved in the midterm elections.

Trump is sending up to 15,000 U.S. troops to the border to stave off a caravan of migrants slowly making its way through southern Mexico, hundreds of miles from the border.

Just five years ago, the Republican National Committee (RNC) reported that the party's very survival depends upon attracting more minorities and women. "The economic environment should favor Republican incumbents".

Trump is telling the caravans to turn back and insisting they will not be allowed in.

"In view of analysts at ING, Tuesday's United States mid-term elections will have a major say over where the dollar trades for the rest of the year". If Democrats succeed here (they need a total of 218 seats for a majority), they can severely restrict Trump's elbow room to act on key election promises, like the border wall, apart from being a major embarrassment to Trump.

"I'm not on the ticket, but I am on the ticket, because this is also a referendum about me", he told a rally in MS recently.

Should Republicans remain in control of Congress, it's likely the Trump administration will try to make the personal tax cuts included in last year's reform package permanent.

And he's crediting the dozens of rallies he's held on behalf of candidates, saying that they "have really been the thing that's caused this big fervor" to start and to continue.

How it would happen: Speaking of small but substantial possibilities, that's what Republicans have when it comes to holding the House.

Trump spent his final hours on the trail Monday in OH and in, with a further stop planned in Missouri.

In prepared remarks for a speech Sunday at an interfaith prayer lunch in Chattanooga, Bredesen said Trump will "have plenty of derogatory things to say about me".

Another wild card: The campaign's closing days come just a week after a gunman, who allegedly hated immigrants and Jews, killed 11 people at a Pittsburgh synagogue. Their left-wing activist base will demand they move quickly to impeach the president.

Bredesen added that he's not running against Trump.

"I know his opponent - he's a bad guy, not a good person".

"In view of analysts at Deutsche Bank, tomorrow's U.S. mid-term elections are the focal point for the week and polls and betting markets indicate that the Democrats are likely to take control of the House, while the Republicans are likely to retain Senate control".

CNN shows the dems ahead in the House of Representatives 55 to 42 per cent.

In this respect, the divisiveness and controversy that have been a deepening feature of America's political landscape - since at least 2016 when Mr Trump unleashed his aggressive campaign for the presidency, tapping old fault lines and pent-up resentments - appear to have energised voters.

With stops in Cleveland, Ohio; Fort Wayne, Indiana; then Cape Girardeau, Missouri today, it will be well after midnight (local time) before the real estate billionaire and populist showman gets back to the White House. Let's assume the double-digit leads that Democrats used to have on the generic ballot (until recently) prevails on Election Day, and Americans vote Democratic by 10 or more points nationwide.
