Gillum fell short in his bid to become Florida's first African-American governor. Meanwhile, Republican Rick Scott, Florida's current governor, held a slim lead over incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson for a seat in the U.S. Senate, leading by 34,000 votes on Wednesday morning.

After his concession speech, supporters hugged one another.

Pinder's mother Phillis, who accompanied the Liberty City resident and his young son to the polls, added, "We have a president who doesn't get his information correct - he says things that just are not true - and he speaks so cruelly".

DeSantis called Gillum a "committed leftist ideologue".

DeSantis, 40, an Iraq War veteran, decorated military lawyer and former Florida congressman, defeated the Tallahassee mayor by a razor thin margin Tuesday night, with the two candidates neck and neck in the heated contest for the majority of the evening.

More than 5.2 million voters cast ballots ahead of Election Day in the battleground state, and records show that Democrats have a slight edge.

If Gillum wins, he will be the first Democratic governor elected by Floridians in 20 years.

He said that winning "will send a message to Mr. Trump, and Mr. DeSantis as well, that the politics of hatred of division and separation, that they've come to an end".

DeSantis, whose endorsement from President Trump boosted his nomination for the Republican party, pledged during his campaign to keep taxes low in Florida, and improve the coastline through beach restoration and flood mitigation.

While it's no surprise that in MSNBC's hypothetical world the Democrat wins every time, polls for Florida's gubernatorial race have been trending in Gillum's direction. Democrats ran up the score in South Florida and the Tallahassee region, while narrowly eking out an advantage among Orlando-area early voters.

The FBI has been conducting a probe of alleged public corruption in Tallahassee, and while Gillum has said he has been told he is not the target, Republicans used the investigation as a cudgel against him. Trump traveled to each state in the closing days of the election cycle to energize Republicans at "Make America Great Again" rallies. "I am not going to let the media smear me", DeSantis said. The FBI is probing whether developers were able to influence projects in the city by funneling gifts to elected officials.
