And the sudden emergence of a huge caravan of migrants heading toward the U.S. border just before the election has also fired up both bases, but especially conservatives who are concerned about border security.

In the Chicago suburb of Downers Grove, at a church along a leafy street, 500 people had voted in the first two hours of the morning - twice as many as two years ago, according to poll worker David Mendalski. Democrats have been hoping for large turnouts from the Hispanic and African-American communities, who tend to vote blue.

Voters line up in Las Vegas.

Americans are going to the polls to vote on all 435 seats in the House, 35 of the 100 Senate seats and dozens of state governors.

Republicans automatically retain control of at least 42 of their Senate seats that are not up for election this year, so it will be hard but not impossible, for Democrats to win the majority. Democrats need him to win if they hope to have any chance at taking over the Senate, as much of a long shot as it is for them to do that this cycle.

What happens on election day?

US President Donald Trump has made a last bid for voters to back the Republican party on the eve of the mid-term election. "Now it's like the hottest thing".

Early voting totals would appear to support this.

After weeks of bitter campaigning, USA voters go to the polls today. On the Democrat side, Texas Senate candidate Beto O'Rourke is saying he would push to impeach the president if elected.

He said: "This is the single most important off-year election in my lifetime. Trump has done a good job at keeping Republicans angry".

"I am extremely happy with the economy", Gerlock said. It is now made up of 51 Republicans and 49 Democrats.

"If they lose this November, the civil war inside the Democratic Party is going to consume them for years and is going to make Donald Trump's re-election in 2020 a forgone conclusion", he said.

Polling stations are now open and voting is underway.

For the 29 Republican House seats that were rated "toss-ups" by the Cook Political Report, Democratic candidates crushed GOP opponents by raising an average of $5.5 million to just $3 million.

The O'Rourke-Cruz race is one of a half-dozen Senate contests that are being closely watched to determine control of the chamber.

Other tight Senate races are in Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, Tennessee and West Virginia.

Trump said in an interview with Sinclair Broadcasting on Monday that he wished he had a softer tone during his first two years in office - even as he continued his relentless attacks on political rivals. "Up until today, I would've said, 'If the election were held today, we would win, '" Pelosi said on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" last week. He's a military veteran who prides himself on not being a career politician.

One such race involving a woman is seen as a potential bellwether for how the day may go.

Kentucky and IN are the first areas where polls will close, which will be at 6pm EST / 11pm GMT.

But as he visited IN on Monday he conceded the House may slip from his party's grasp.

This is a different breed of Democrat.

The midterm elections are shaping up as the ultimate grudge match of MAGA-backing supporters of President Trump and the #Resist movement aimed at stopping his every move. Millions more will vote Tuesday in what members of both parties consider a referendum on President Trump. "America faces a critical choice: whether to build on the extraordinary prosperity that Republican policies have delivered for our nation - or whether to allow Democrats to take control and take a giant wrecking ball to your economy and your future".

Two races which are of particular interest are Georgia, where Democrat Stacey Abrams is seeking to become the first black woman to become governor of a USA state, and Florida, where Democrat Andrew Gillum is locked in a bitter battle with Republican and Trump acolyte Ron DeSantis.
