The former captain's one-off return for the Wayne Rooney Foundation worldwide against the U.S. will dominate the manager's press conference this afternoon but Southgate is again planning to select a youthful party with Jadon Sancho and James Maddison keeping their places.

But Southgate confirmed that Rooney wouldn't start the match or wear the number 10 shirt, but could be handed the captain's armband as a substitute.

But England's most-capped player, Peter Shilton, accused the FA of getting it "completely wrong" by offering Rooney - who retired from global football past year - what is effectively a testimonial appearance.

Former Three Lions captain Rooney last played for England in November 2016 but will make his 120th and final appearance for his country against the United States. He was a great captain for us.

"I think it's great", Kane said after his two goals for club Tottenham against PSV kept their Champions League hopes alive.

"He was the captain when I first got into the squad".

"But I can't get too angry and upset if England want to give Rooney a send-off because we've treated our greatest players so badly in the past. So if he plays, of course he'll be the captain".

"It's a great experience for the younger players in our team".

"Wayne was one of our greatest ever England players".

"In terms of the captaincy, the last game he came on [as a substitute] with me, Jordan Henderson gave him the armband as soon as he ran on the pitch".

Kane has scored 19 times so far in his England career - 34 goals shy of Rooney's current record of 53, but was non-committal on whether he has an eye on surpassing that tally.

"I'd have to say I don't think we've been brilliant at [honouring former players] over the years". "He's a threat running in behind defences, so this will be a good opportunity to look at him and try to see how he fits in to what we are trying to do".
