These three additional Senate seats, assuming no shenanigans in the Florida recount, would give Mr. Trump's party a 54-46 majority in the next Congress, with no worries about having to water down conservative legislation to placate moderate Republican Sens.

"Today is more than about Democrats and Republicans".

The gains among women on Capitol Hill come as potential Democratic candidates for president are already taking steps to challenge Trump, several prominent female Democrats among them.

She saluted "those dynamic, diverse and incredible candidates who have taken back the House for the American people".

Republicans backed by the White House defeated Democratic senators in several states won by Trump in 2016 - Florida, Indiana, Missouri and North Dakota. At the same time, there could be regular reports about what the committee staff has found in subpoenaed records - perhaps Trump's tax returns, his company's internal financial documents, the records of his various oligarch partners in the former Soviet Union, and e-mails and other digital messages between Trump's team and people in Russian Federation.

Almost 40% of voters cast their ballots to express opposition to the president, according to VoteCast, while one-in-four said they voted to express support for Trump. Laura Ingraham got it right in saying if Mr. Trump had not campaigned in Texas and the other key battlegrounds, Ted Cruz and others might have lost.

Second, in the wake of their House victory, Democrats are likely to be more confrontational and subject Trump to more scrutiny.

The campaign unfolded against a backdrop of ugly rhetoric and angry debates on immigration, health care and the role of Congress in overseeing the president. Democrats flippedseats in suburban districts outside of Washington, Philadelphia, Miami, Chicago and Denver. Nevertheless, Trump was quick to issue a warning against any aggressive Democratic intent, warning, "If the Democrats think they are going to waste Taxpayer Money investigating us at the House level, then we will likewise be forced to consider investigating them for all of the leaks of Classified Information, and much else, at the Senate level".

But the president warned he would not hesitate to retaliate if House Democrats use their committee powers in the next Congress to investigate members of his administration or his personal finances.

Meanwhile, about three-quarters of nonwhite voters, with or without college degrees, voted for Democratic candidates in their districts.

The most likely impact of House investigations would be a swarm of legal issues for the White House, which is likely to fire up Trump's base for 2020 while producing no results to satisfy Democrat voters.

Voters were on track to send at least 99 women to the House, shattering the record of 84 now. Perhaps the biggest new political star among them is New York's 29-year-old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a liberal firebrand from the Bronx. If anything, he may well double down on his nativist message, because it didn't hurt the Republican campaigns across many states.

The debate was dominated not by the GOP's $1.5 trillion tax cuts but by Trump's dire prediction of "invasion" from the migrant caravan and what he called the "radical" agenda of speaker-in-waiting Pelosi. He predicted an "invasion" from the migrant caravan making its way toward the USA and decried the "radical" agenda of speaker-in-waiting Pelosi.

All 435 seats in the U.S. House were up for re-election, although fewer than 90 were considered competitive.

And outside Richmond, Virginia, one-time tea party favorite Rep. Dave Brat lost to Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a former Central Intelligence Agency operative motivated to run for office after the GOP vote to gut the Affordable Care Act. In both Senate and House races, Democrats have focused heavily on health care and protecting people with pre-existing medical conditions. If they give her a hard time, perhaps we will add some Republican votes. West Coast results were still coming. The winners included Democrat Mikie Sherrill, a former Navy pilot and federal prosecutor who ran for a suburban Newark seat.

Pelosi spoke as Democrats closed in on control of the House.

"The Senate is a pretty collegial place and even though we had big differences over things like taxes and judges, there were plenty of other things we did together and no reason that would stop simply because the House now becomes Democratic", he said.
