Who says we can't fix things? We are closing the ozone hole!

Scientists at NASA said they have located the largest ozone hole ever recorded in a report released

This is due to internationally agreed actions carried out under the historic Montreal Protocol, which came into being over 30 years ago in response to the revelation that chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other ozone-depleting substances - used in aerosols, cooling and refrigeration systems, and many other items - were tearing a hole in the ozone layer and allowing unsafe ultraviolet radiation to flood through. "As a result of the Montreal Protocol much more severe ozone depletion in the polar regions has been avoided", the report said. The fact that the ozone layer plays a decisive role in countering excessive amount of solar radiation and ultraviolet rays, so that the task of saving and restoring a place of honor is not the first decade.

Now, the latest report put out by a United Nations panel suggests that the ozone hole could patch up in the 2060s, if all goes to plan. Scientists raised the alarm and ozone-depleting chemicals were phased out worldwide. Scientists had learned that these chlorine-containing chemicals triggered the formation of a gaping hole in the ozone layer right above Antartica.

"It's really good news", said report co-chairman Paul Newman, the chief Earth scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

If the current rate of recovery of about 1 percent to 3 percent per decade continues, then the northern hole could be closed completely by 2030 and the southern by 2060.

"These new assessment results highlight the importance of continued long-term monitoring of HFCs (the hydrofluorocarbon chemicals used for cooling and refrigeration) in the atmosphere as the Kigali Amendment begins to take hold", David Fahey, co-chair of the Montreal Protocol Scientific Assessment Panel, said. This year, the ozone hole over the South Pole peaked at about 9.6 million square miles. Banned CFC emissions are increasing in China, but the Chinese government has promised to fix the problem.

Scientists say the Antarctic ozone hole is expected to gradually close, and that the entire ozone layer will return by the 2060s to levels last seen in the 1980s.

The findings of a new UN-backed report, released on Monday, showing the ongoing healing of the ozone layer, are being hailed as a demonstration of what global agreements can achieve, and an inspiration for more ambitious climate action to halt a catastrophic rise in world temperatures.

The replacements that are now being used to cool cars and refrigerators have to be replaced themselves with some chemicals that will not be worsening the global warming. An amendment to the Montreal Protocol that goes into effect next year would cut use of some of those gases.
