Red Sox slugger J.D. Martinez makes unexpected Silver Slugger history

This marked his second career Silver Slugger award.

Mike Trout has won the Silver Slugger Award for the sixth straight time, given to the best offensive players at east position in both leagues. Though everyone knew he had a season for the ages, Thursday's Silver Slugger Award announcements all but confirmed it.

He spent most of his time as Boston's DH, hitting.297 with 27 homers and 79 RBIs to go with a.970 OPS in 93 games at the position. As an outfielder, he hit.384 with 16 home runs, 51 RBI, and a 1.130 OPS.

Abreu became the first player in White Sox history to hit 20 or more home runs in each of his first five seasons, and he joined Albert Pujols (2001-'10) and Ted Williams (1939-'42, 1946-49) as the only players in Major League Baseball history to produce 30 or more doubles and 20 or more plus home runs in each of his first five seasons.

Betts surely couldn't have set that career high without J.D. Martinez, who managed to exceed expectations in his first season with the Red Sox.

Meanwhile, six players received their first Silver Slugger while the Indians, Red Sox, Rockies and Diamondbacks all had multiple winners. The 34-year-old outfielder was a first-time All-Star for the Atlanta Braves in 2018, and now he's a first-time Silver Slugger victor, as well.

In 2018, Betts led the majors in batting average (.346) and slugging percentage (.640), becoming the first Red Sox player to accomplish that feat since Williams in 1957.
