'SNL' Video: War Veteran Dan Crenshaw Takes Shots at Pete Davidson

On last night's show he sought to build bridges. In the first place, there is usually any game I'd rather watch and, secondly, those "satire" guys play a little rough for my personal tastes. The veteran lost his right eye in an IED blast while serving in Afghanistan. The Congressman-elect graciously accepted. But when SNL creator Lorne Michaels called to offer an apology and invite Crenshaw on the show, the veteran saw a chance to address the American people on a national stage.

"You may be surprised to hear he's a congressional candidate from Texas and not a hitman in a porno movie", Davidson added. "I know he lost his eye in war or whatever".

The outcry was immediate. "That being said I doubt you would have seen the great Johnny Carson or Jay Leno go there".

This week, Davidson apologized to Crenshaw, saying: "The man is a war hero, and he deserves all of the respect in the world". "If there is one good thing that came from this, maybe it was for one day the left and the right finally came together to agree on something: That I'm a dick".

"Whether we are Democrats, Republicans or independents, we should cherish and hold in the highest regards our men and women who go overseas and serve our nation, especially the ones who come back permanently injured and disfigured like Dan Crenshaw".

Davidson commented on the ringtone in between laughs, and Crenshaw said, "What?" Crenshaw's cell phone rang, playing the song "Breathin" by Ariana Grande, who recently ended her much-publicized engagement to Davidson.

"You gonna answer that?"

"Just tell me, am I in the report?"

As Davidson introduced and thanked Crenshaw for coming, the Republican congressman-elect replied, "Thanks for making a Republican look good".

"He looks like a troll doll with a tapeworm ..." Pete looks like Martin Short in The Santa Clause 3. When Pete Davidson made a flip joke about that, there was huge backlash and he faced criticism not just from conservatives and Republicans but even shows like The View and fellow cast members. He then dismissively added with a shrug: "I'm sorry. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head". "But in the end, we chose to do it because what better platform than to give a united message for the country, talk about forgiveness and then talk about veterans?" But then he turned more serious to note that from this incident, they learned Americans can forgive one another, and since it was Veterans' Day weekend he wanted everyone to connect with a veteran.

When it was all said and done, Crenshaw, a rising star in the G.O.P., encouraged people to Never Forget. Many other veterans, however, either stood by Davidson - who lost his firefighter father in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001 - or simply dismissed the ensuing social media pandemonium as a silly bit of outrage culture.

Did you get that ... Davidson's father was a New York City firefighter who died during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, when Davidson was seven years old.
