Redesigned 2020 Toyota Corolla Finally Gets a Hybrid

In previous-generation guise, the Corolla sedan was offered only with the petrol engine, while the hatch had the choice of petrol or hybrid mills. Although no other details are available on what exactly this hybrid auto will be all about, the Japanese promise more mileage than ever before.

The sedan's exterior design is based along "shooting robust" lines, which the automaker says presents a sporty silhouette, complemented by a lower stance and wider tread than its predecessor. Toyota said that the engine will best the 34 mpg combined rating for the 2019 Corolla LE Eco.

The twelfth-generation C-segment model has made its global debut at the Guangzhou Motor Show alongside a China-only Levin version, with the USA version also being announced simultaneously. The scalable platform already underpins Toyota products such as the Avalon, C-HR, and Camry.

Depending on driving conditions, Toyota claims the Corolla Sedan Hybrid offers up to 50 percent all-electric drive on the everyday commute.

Toyota also claims the interior offers "high sensory quality and advanced technology".

Toyota says that compared with the previous version, the instrument panel, cowl, hood and beltline height are lower to increase visibility and create the interior's open feel. A new 2.0-liter inline-4 is available and offers 169 hp and a hybrid powertrain will be announced shortly. For the USA market, the new Corolla carries forward the 1.8-litre petrol engine offered in its predecessor, though with a change in tuning. The Euro Corolla also is offered with a less powerful hybrid setup that uses an older 1.8-liter engine and a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT); the US -spec Corolla hybrid could use this setup instead. Track width, however, is up by 0.5 and 0.9 inches at the front and rear, respectively, while a multi-link rear suspension replaces the torsion beam of today's Corolla. The front MacPherson strut layout has also been totally revised for this platform, and newly-developed shock absorbers also make their way on to the auto. Apart from airbags and ABS, safety features include automatic high beam, road sign assist, pre-collision system, night time pedestrian detection, full range adaptive cruise control and lane trace assist.

Of the two versions, one is known as the "Levin" - a sportier model for the North American and Japanese markets, while the more upmarket model, simply known as "Corolla", is slated for release in Europe.

The 2019 Corolla Sedan will expand Toyota's Corolla lineup in Europe to three body styles, adding to the existing Hatchback and Touring Sports. Japan will get the all-new sedan and estate based on the Sporty variant, within the same year.
