Elton John stars in nostalgic John Lewis Christmas campaign

John Lewis and Lidl have exchanged a bit of festive banter at Elton John's expense.

However, others criticised the advert for not being "Christmassy" enough.

United Kingdom store chain John Lewis has released its 2018 Christmas commercial, which stars Elton John in a role he's said to have been paid $6.5 million to perform in four days.

"I think it's a build up to the John Lewis Christmas ad, that's just my guess though", said another.

The retail chain's annual tear-jerker to sell Christmas this year takes the form of Elton performing his first major hit Your Song, and charts his journey from playing the piano in school and in small London pubs to reaching global megastardom.

"The John Lewis Christmas campaign has so many warm memories for me and my family", John said of the commercial in a statement.

Especially for fans of the legendary Elton John.

The gauntlet has been thrown down, rival companies wanting to make a touching Christmas advert.

A spokesperson from John Lewis told Express.co.uk: "So this Christmas, we will be selling pianos, so you can buy the gift".

"The speculation in recent months around the costs associated with this year's ad is wildly inaccurate and our total spend is similar to previous years", the press release stated.

"And you can tell everybody... this is ya thooonngg", wrote Helen Gradwell, describing a scene of someone gifting John Lewis underwear. It has been reported that John received a staggering £5 million ($A8.8 million) to appear, a figure both he and John Lewis have refuted.

Finally, there were those who realised the effect the John Lewis advert could have before it was even released.
