Google Appoints Another Indian to Head Its Cloud Business

Gregarious Google Cloud named Thomas Kurian as Senior Vice President

Greene, who became CEO of the Google unit in December 2015, will stay on as a board member at parent company Alphabet.

According to The Information, however, the Google Cloud chief's faced frequent internal disagreements over efforts to pair her department with other Alphabet units.

"With almost 300 customers speaking about how Google Cloud is helping to transform their businesses, no one was questioning our seriousness or our abilities". She then instigated an audacious drive into the market worth tens of billions of dollars into new data centres, features, and enterprise support capabilities, which saw the company claim a number of big-name customers.

Greene said she had joined Google three years ago with plans to leave after two years and will move into investing and philanthropy in January.

She will be replaced later this month by Oracle veteran Thomas Kurian, who most recently was in charge of cloud product development for the database giant, as it looks to transition customers to the cloud and keep pace with the likes of AWS and Microsoft Azure.

Reflecting on her time leading Google Cloud, Greene praised staff and commented on the "enormous opportunity ahead" in the cloud space. That kind of "virtual machine" software is one of the technologies that make computing clouds efficient and relatively cheap.

Wang believes that although Greene made good strides to make Google Cloud a more enterprise-friendly proposition in the public cloud "it wasn't enough", he said.

"Kurian's background at Oracle will help him understand the market, but Oracle Cloud is not all that successful compared to AWS and Azure", he said.

"In a few short years, under Diane's leadership, Cloud has become an incredible business built on Google's decades of investment in infrastructure, data security, and AI".

In her blog post, Greene praised her staff for boosting Google's business. But he had a hard time transitioning the company to Cloud computing and Oracle struggled to gain much traction against Amazon Web Services and Microsoft's Azure.

Google Cloud still lags behind the cloud market leaders, but has been able to tell some big success stories under Greene's leadership, including a whole company migration by Spotify and a $5 billion, five-year commitment from social media company Snapchat. He'll now have a chance to try it again.

Kurian stepped down from Oracle in September.

"We're really excited to welcome Thomas whose product vision, customer focus, and deep expertise will be a huge asset to our growing Cloud business", he said.
