Body Found In Costa Rica ‘Matches That Of Missing South Florida Woman’

The body was found Monday, half-buried and covered with plastic bags in a mountainous area behind the Airbnb where she was staying.

Walter Espinoza, a government spokesman said in a press conference that they still can not provide any details or confirm that the body belongs to 36-year-old Stefaniak.

Carlos Caicedo, Stefaniak's brother, said the owner of the Airbnb told him a security guard saw his sister get into a auto with her bags at 5 a.m. the morning of her flight.

Stefaniak, 36, was on a trip to celebrate her birthday with her sister-in-law and friend, April Burton.

Authorities in Costa Rica say that a body has been found on the Airbnb property where missing Florida woman, Carla Stefaniak, 36, was staying.

Espinoza shared no details on what police uncovered, other than to say they have reviewed surveillance footage and interviewed anyone they could find who had contact with Stefaniak. The U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are also assisting with the case, Stefaniak's family said. The last time Burton spoke to Stefaniak, she told her that it was raining insane and the power went out. Stefaniak, who stayed behind to enjoy an extra night, was scheduled to fly home the following day but never made her 1:30 p.m. flight, authorities said. Burton flew back on the 27th, and Stefaniak planned to fly back the day after.

An autopsy revealed Stefaniak had died of stab wounds to the neck and extremities, in addition to a strong blow to the head.

Stefaniak dropped off her rental auto at a Thrifty vehicle Rental business after dropping off her sister-in-law. We're going on six days not hearing from her.

Jaime said they knew something was off about the guard's story, so they checked her work computer for Uber receipts there were two from November 27, the trip from the airport and the trip around downtown.

Espinoza moved to Costa Rica in June 2018.

Her sister-in-law, April Antonieta, wrote in a Facebook post that on the day she went missing that Stefaniak had taken an Uber from Thrifty vehicle rental. "Carla is the person that wakes up and opens her eyes and looks at her phone and literally looks at Instagram and whatsapp".

Family members said Costa Rican officials were working closely with the U.S.to investigate the woman's disappearance. "The same Uber driver drove Stefaniak sightseeing and shopping".

The Tampa Bay Times reports Stefaniak's last message to her family said: "It's pretty sketchy here", that the power was out and it was pouring rain.

Investigators performed an autopsy Tuesday, and plan to work with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to match fingerprints to formally confirm the body belongs to Stefaniak. The last time she posted to social media accounts was the previous night.

Stefaniak's co-workers said she was an excellent employee who could get along with anyone. Airbnb told CBS News it has no comment, and Uber said it will assist local authorities. He said, "To be totally honest...we didn't get vibe that something had happened".

Another brother, Carlos Caicedo, previously told WFLA that he's in Costa Rica, saying he visited the Airbnb and elaborated on what the guards had told him. The owners are fully cooperating with the authorities in the investigation and we hope that once the facts are determined, the perpetrator is brought to justice.
