The United States warned Russian Federation on Tuesday it will withdraw from a major cold war treaty limiting mid-range nuclear arms if Moscow does not dismantle missiles that Washington says breach it within 60 days.

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova rejected accusations of noncompliance: "Russia strictly complies with the conditions of the treaty and the United States side is aware of that".

During a conference in the Russian city of Sochi on Tuesday, Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said that Russia is preparing for an arms race.

"We need to create a coordinated response to the actions of Russia", Klimkin said, adding that he raised "a set of practical steps with a number of proposals" at the meeting as to how NATO, Ukraine and Georgia might do that together.

President Trump and National Security Adviser John Bolton had previously suggested the US would withdraw from the treaty, but Pompeo's announcement Tuesday officially starts the clock.

According to a leaked memo published by the Washington Post, the national security adviser, John Bolton, has ordered the Pentagon to "develop and deploy ground-launched missiles at the earliest possible date".
