The #STLCards have acquired six-time NL All-Star 1B Paul Goldschmidt from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for C Carson Kelly, RHP Luke Weaver, INF Andy Young and the club's Compensation Round B selection in the 2019 MLB Draft.

Goldschmidt hit.290 with 33 home runs last season for the Diamondbacks.

Despite an bad start to last season, he bounced back to once again become a powerful force. He has had an OPS of at least.800 in each of his last eight seasons. This is strictly a rental for the Cardinals, but the two sides could work out a contract extension before he reaches free agency following the 2019 season. He was 7-11 with a 4.95 ERA in 30 games (25 starts) in 2018.

The DeLand native spent three years with FSU, from 2012-14 and dominated, going 16-6 with a 3.04 ERA, striking out 244 compared to walking just 63. He is highly regarded for his defensive ability.

The draft choice that Arizona got will come after the second round, likely a pick somewhere in the high 70s or low 80s. Patrick Corbin has a wicked slider that hitters can't seem to connect with. Yesterday, left-handed starting pitcher Patrick Corbin signed with the Washington Nationals for six years and $140 million.

Although the Diamondbacks are entering rebuilding mode, it's unlikely they'll allow Goldschmidt, 31, to leave for the Cardinals, Astros or any other team for less than market value. Greinke came to the Dback after three seasons with the Dodgers.

Like Mattingly and Marlins CEO Derek Jeter, Stottlemyre and Hillman have ties to the Yankees. Hillman is a former manager in the Yankees' minor league system, and in 2011-13 he was Mattingly's bench coach with the Dodgers.
