Eovaldi re-signing with Red Sox

Despite the risk, it's still a move the Red Sox had to make.

After being acquired by the Red Sox, Eovaldi quickly became a critical component to the their rotation as he went 3-3, with a 3.33 ERA, career low 0.5 HR/9 and 2.88 FIP over 12-games (11 starts). He missed the 2017 season while recuperating from Tommy John surgery. Eovaldi's new deal pays $17 million annually.

He started twice and pitched four times in relief, showcasing his 100-mph fastball and allowing just 15 hits and four earned runs in 22 1/3 innings against the loaded offenses of the Yankees, Astros and Dodgers. He made four starts against the Yankees, going 2-0 with a 0.39 ERA, and beat the NY in Game 3 of the AL Division Series, when he gave up one run in seven innings.

Eovaldi's contract is worth $68million over four years, the Red Sox announced on Thursday. He had arthroscopic surgery late in spring training to remove loose bodies in his pitching elbow and did not make his season debut until May 30 - his first major league game since August 10, 2016. After all, out of those 140 pitchers, Eovaldi was just middle of the pack - 67th - in strikeout rate.

Talks between the Red Sox and free-agent righty Nathan Eovaldi are "intensifying", Robert Murray of The Athletic reports (via Twitter). In a sense, front offices now have to construct two different teams: one that can win a division over the long 162-game season and one that can win the postseason. But Eovaldi wasn't done there, he came up big in the World Series against the Dodgers.

Either way you slice it, the Red Sox signed a pitcher, who would be the one or two in many rotations, to be their fourth or fifth starter and he's still in his prime under a pretty decent contract.
