Fisher helped the Los Angeles Lakers win five National Basketball Association titles during his 18-season playing career and served as president of the players' union.

Fisher will inherit a team that includes two-time WNBA MVP Candace Parker.

Fisher becomes the 12 head coach in Sparks franchise history. "Derek is a champion and proven leader on and off the court". Agler had an 85-51 record with the Sparks and led the team to the 2016 WNBA championship. The Sparks defeated the Minnesota Lynx, 75-68, in the first round of the playoffs, then lost to the Washington Mystics, 96-64, in the second round. "With his wealth of experience as a former player and head coach, I can't think of a better steward for our basketball team moving forward".
