Flu outbreaks increase nationwide, widespread activity in some states

The CDC recently released data on early season flu vaccination coverage in the United States, with new numbers showing that vaccination rates are up compared to the same time last season. Last week, cases of influenza rose by 72 percent, with new cases in 58 out of 62 counties. During the 2016-17 flu season, the county saw 169 confirmed cases; the year before that, the number of cases was 109, according to state Department of Health data.

During the 2017-2018 flu season, over 300 flu related deaths were reported in Indiana.

Doctors say that there is still time to get a flu shot, although the average duration of flu season is 16 weeks.

Statewide, 1,300 people have been sent to the hospital because of the flu since October, which is why state officials are urging you to get a flu vaccine if you haven't done so yet.

The CDC reports elevated flu activity has already been observed across the nation and Virginia is one of nine states experiencing moderate flu activity.

"This is a very sad reminder that flu is unpredictable and can be deadly", Julie Vaishampayan, MD, a public health officer with the county, said in a statement. There have been 1,305 hospitalizations so far this season and one pediatric death.

Last week, State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker declared that influenza is prevalent in New York State.

The state previously reported widespread activity for the week that ended December 15. "Getting vaccinated protects you as well as the people around you, including those who are more vulnerable, like babies and young children, elderly people and people with chronic health conditions".

Hand-washing, staying away from sick people and avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth can help prevent the flu.
