Gase was 23-26 in three seasons with Miami, including a playoff game in 2016, before being fired Monday.

There is already some speculation that Gase would be interested in bringing back Vance Joseph, the former Jets cornerback who was recently fired by the Denver Broncos.

Adam Schefter and Jeff Darlington of ESPN first reported the news. He is set to become the first Jets head coach with previous National Football League head-coaching experience since Bill Parcells was hired by the franchise in 1997.

Gase followed coach John Fox to Chicago in 2015 to be the Bears' offensive coordinator and was hired by the Dolphins as their head coach the following season.

The Cincinnati Bengals and the Dolphins remain the only teams yet to name their head coach for the 2019 season.

The Jets finished the 2018 season 4-12 and last in the AFC East.

This came on the same day as former Jets coach Todd Bowles was hired as Tampa Bay's defensive coordinator.

Additionally, Breer reports that quarterback Sam Darnold played a role in the Jets decision to hire Gase.

It's unclear how much say Darnold had in the hiring of Gase, but the 21-year-old quarterback reportedly thought Gase was the best candidate after talking with the coach Monday night over FaceTime.
