Vacaville Man Arrested for Allegedly Stealing $10M Winning Lottery Ticket From Roommate

Police in Vacaville say a man stole a lottery scratcher worth $10 million from his roommate.

But the ticket turned out to be a victor, and promised to flood his bank account with US$10,000 (NZ$15,000), or so he thought.

He suspected foul play - that one of his roommates had stolen the ticket in the night - and went to the police.

But when he attempted to collect his winnings the following morning, he was told his ticket wasn't a victor and had been altered.

According to a post on the Vacaville Police Departments Facebook page, a shopper visiting the Lucky Grocery Store on Peabody Road December 20 bought a $30 scratcher ticket in the hopes of winning extra cash for the holidays.

Lottery officials began the standard process of investigating the ticket, which includes filling out a victor claim form.

Unawares of all this, Saosongyang was told he'd be able to collect his winnings on 7 January from the Lottery Sacramento's headquarters in California. In the process of their inquiries, they quickly discovered the ticket had been reported stolen.

Vacaville police spokesman Chris Polen told The Washington Post that lottery officials had talked with the victim, though he wasn't certain the man would collect that $10 million. The ticket, in fact, turned out to be worth $10 million.

The lottery investigator teamed up with a Vacaville detective to get to the bottom of things. Who was responsible for the ticket presented the following day?

In reviewing the grocery store's surveillance video officials witnessed two significant transactions: first, was the alleged victim buying the winning a Scratcher ticket, then, some hours later, Saosongyang, purchasing the same type of ticket.

On Monday, the investigator summoned Saosongyang to the Sacramento office to collect his winnings. When he arrived, he was arrested.

Saosongyang has been booked into Sacramento County Jail on Grand Theft charges, and will face a court hearing at a later date.

He remains jailed and it's unclear if he has an attorney.

"Although, I'm sure everything will work out in the end", he told the newspaper.
