CES 2019: New Software Aims To Crack Down On Netflix Account Sharing

Sharing your Netflix account? Company says it’s come up with a way to stop you

But new software unveiled at the CES tech show in Las Vegas could crack down on such account sharing.

The way it works, is that streaming service companies would hire Synamedia, which in turn uses AI, behavioral analytics and machine learning to monitor and analyse password sharing activity across user accounts.

Many people are comfortable sharing their Netflix and other streaming service passwords with friends, however the popular streaming company is looking to crack down on account sharing.

While Netflix offers the ability to share with others, it is believed that standard is abused and log-in information is being shared with more than makes financial sense for the company.

"Casual credentials sharing is becoming too expensive to ignore", said a Synamedia spokesman.

Media research firm Magid found that 26 per cent of millennials share passwords for video streaming services.

The system uses machine learning to determine a user's typical patterns of account activity, making it possible to identify when something out of the ordinary happens - such as being logged in at two locations at once, or the account being used in different parts of the world or country.

Meanwhile Parks Associates predicts that by 2021, $9.9billion of pay-tv revenues and $1.2billion of streaming revenues will be lost to password sharing.

The company says that in "extreme" cases, where passwords have been sold online, accounts will simply be delted.

A streaming service, like Netflix and Amazon Prime, buys access to Synamedia's platform. "It's a great way to keep honest people honest while benefiting from an incremental revenue stream", said Jean Marc Racine, CPO and GM EMEA of Synamedia. The data includes a range of factors, like where an account is being accessed from, what time it's used, what content is being watched and by what device.
