Teen crashes vehicle after driving blindfolded for Bird Box challenge

Layton Police said that a 17-year-old girl was driving down Utah's Layton Parkway on Monday when she chose to cover her eyes with her beanie to participate in the so-called "Bird Box Challenge" and immediately lost control of her grey truck.

Initially, police were told the crash was caused by the driver getting distracted while she talked to her 16-year-old male passenger, Lyman said. Police say the young woman in question had pulled her hat over her eyes while she was driving, which resulted in the crash.

For those that are unfamiliar with the concept, the challenge stems from the film as some people have decided that they should wear blindfolds and navigate their way around the world.

That's when she veered into oncoming traffic and collided with another vehicle.

"I nearly feel silly saying this", said Layton Police Lieutenant Travis Lyman.

Police are recommending reckless driving charges in the case but it will be up to the County Attorney's Office to determine what charges, if any, are filed. Driving is one of the most inherently risky things we do, and this kind of willful disregard for the safety of others should be grounds for an immediate and long-lasting suspension, just like a DUI.

Authorities say no one was injured during the crash. "It really puts everybody at risk", said Travis Lyman of the Layton police.

'Can't believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE.

The challenge urges people to do daily and potentially harmful tasks with their eyes covered, as an homage to the Netflix movie "Bird Box".
