Healthcare guaranteed for all New Yorkers, says Bill de Blasio

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio says he will push to make the city the first in the country to mandate paid vacation days.

Universal healthcare has become a rallying cry for liberal Democrats and an article of faith for numerous new representatives in Congress. Officials claimed that New York's scheme would be the most comprehensive free healthcare system in America.

During and appearance on MSNBC, de Blasio said the plan will serve the 600,000 New Yorkers without insurance by strengthening NYC's public health insurance option, Metro Plus, and guaranteeing anyone eligible for insurance - including undocumented New Yorkers - has direct access to NYC Health + Hospitals' physicians, pharmacies and mental health and substance abuse services through a new program called NYC Care.

Mayor Bill de Blasio let his progressive flag fly on Thursday as he announced a number of new worker- and immigrant-friendly initiatives in his State of the City Speech.

"I believe there is a need in a democratic society in for this kind of mechanism, a legal defense fund is a very well established idea, it's existed for decades because everyone has a right to a defense in America", Hizzoner said Tuesday. But the services won't be free for everyone, the paper reported: Fees will be assessed on a sliding scale, depending on income. Since 2007, the for-profit school has paid NYC Health + Hospitals for the privilege of being the only global medical school whose students do rotations in the city health care system.

"The irony there is that you're giving $3billion away to Amazon [in city and state subsidies]", Diaz continued, adding that he supports the online retail giant's plans to build a headquarters in Long Island City, Queens, but not the financial incentives offered to it.

An employee would get an hour of paid leave for every 30 hours worked for up to 10 paid days off per year. Part-time workers would fall under a mandate allowing them to accrue paid time off at a guaranteed minimum rate.

"Workers in New York City already earn up to a week of paid time off".

Both stories being leaked first to national press, as opposed to local papers, had local journalists grumbling about - if not outright offended by - yet another display of the mayor's disdain for local NYC media, revealed explicitly previous year in a series of emails released on court order.

In his sixth annual address, de Blasio made the case that the city should be instituting policies that lift residents up-offering them a better quality of life at work and at home.
