Syria intercepts Israeli missiles fired toward Damascus

Syrian state media reported late on Friday that Syrian air defences responded to Israeli missiles and shot them down over Damascus, as a group monitor said the strikes hit near the Syrian capital's airport.

The attack which took place at 11:15 p.m.(2115 GMT), was the second in less than three weeks.

"The results of the aggression so far were limited to a strike on one of the warehouses at Damascus airport", SANA news agency cited a military source as saying.

An AFP correspondent in Damascus heard several loud explosions late on Friday, the worldwide news agency said.

The Jerusalem Post quotes "Syrian opposition" as saying that the Israeli Air Force attacked the bases of Iranian militias and Assad's forces southwest of Damascus.

'Just in the last 36 hours the air force attacked Iranian warehouses containing Iranian weapons in the Damascus International Airport, ' Netanyahu said at the start of a cabinet meeting today.

The last such missile attack was carried out on December 25, 2018, during which the Israeli warplanes fired missiles on Syrian military depots in the western countryside of Damascus from inside the Lebanese airspace.

In an earlier report, SANA had spoken of Syrian air-defense batteries attacking "enemy targets".

"We struck thousands of targets without claiming responsibility or asking for credit", Eisenkot stated, confessing to carrying out strikes on a "near-daily" basis.

A senior Israeli official said in September Israel had carried out more than 200 attacks against Iranian targets in Syria in the last two years.

Israel has not responded to the allegations it was involved in that incident, but previous Israeli air strikes inside Syrian territory have drawn criticism and recently caused tensions with Russian Federation, an ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
