As Jayme Closs starts her long road toward recovery following her kidnapping ordeal, investigators are working to piece together what happened during the almost three months she was in captivity.

The 13-year-old was missing when police arrived, leading to an intense manhunt that ended when she was found alive Thursday about 70 miles from her home.

The search for her started with a mysterious 911 call from the cellphone of her mother, who was found shot to death with her father in their Wisconsin home. Authorities are working to track their movements over the past three months.

Both the woman and the neighbour recognised the teen immediately on Thursday due to the enormous public campaign following her disappearance, Fitzgerald said.

Jayme Closs' suspected kidnapper had no prior criminal record, however, detectives are now looking into his brother who was convicted of sexually assaulting a minor.

"And I would tell her that this experience might feel like it's defining, it might feel like that's who she is now, but it doesn't have to be", Smart said.

The teen was able to escape from a cabin before flagging down a pedestrian walking her dog in the town of Gordon. "She said that this person usually hides her or hides her when others are near, or when he has to leave the household".

Someone blasted open the door of James and Denise Closs' home near Barron with a shotgun in October, gunned the couple down and made off with their 13-year-old daughter, Jayme Closs. Patterson quit, saying he was moving from the area, according to the company.

Naiberg, Jayme's grandfather, said he spent a few hours with her on Friday and she was largely silent.

As an adult she realized they didn't mean any harm, she said. Authorities did not offer any details about the conditions of her captivity or how she had managed to escape.

The cabin is in Eau Claire Acres, about 10 miles outside the tiny town of Gordon, in the dense evergreen forests of north-western Wisconsin.

The sheriff said he didn't know whether Jayme had been physically abused. Jayme had been at home when the killing took place, Fitzgerald said.

Mr Patterson was interviewed by Douglas County officials and then transported to the Barron County jail. "[Jayme] don't know him from Adam".

"She [Closs] just yelled, 'Please help me, I don't know where I am".

Nutter and Jayme went to the closest house, the home of Kristin and Peter Kasinskas.

She said, 'I'm Jayme, ' the woman told CNN affiliate WCCO.

Shortly after law enforcement came for Jayme, they arrested Patterson in his vehicle, while he apparently was looking for the girl.

A former classmate, who was not named, said Patterson stayed mostly to himself and was quiet. Last month he got a cake that read: "Happy Birthday Rose" for her 36th birthday.

Patterson is scheduled to go to court Monday where he is expected to be formally charged with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide and one count of kidnapping.

Thirteen-year-old Jayme Closs was reunited with her aunt and dog on Friday afternoon, posing for a picture her aunt shared on the "Healing for Jayme Closs" Facebook page. "What a great feeling to have her home".
