In doing so, he became the youngest victor of the Sydney International since Lleyton Hewitt in 2001, and the first home talent to claim the prize since Bernard Tomic in 2013.

Alex de Minaur of Australia celebrates defeating Andreas Seppi of Italy in the men's final match at the Sydney International tennis tournament in Sydney, Australia, Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019.

"I've got a lot of expectations now. I'm really happy", de Minaur said. I feel like I'm a much better player. "That's the way final should be, I think", Kvitova said. In a tournament in which none of the seeded players made it to the final four, Sandgren was playing only his second ATP final - having lost in Houston a year ago - while it was the first for wildcard entrant Norrie.

"To back it up from Sydney, I am proud that I was able to get it done in three sets."

Once again, De Minaur had to come from behind but he edged the tiebreak and celebrated his victory by falling flat on his back before kissing the court.

As Australia's highest-ranked male player with a world ranking of 29, de Minaur earned a seeding of 27th for the Australian Open, unlike compatriots Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic, who have paid heavily by drawing big guns Milos Raonic and Marin Cilic respectively.

Sousa was immediately on the back foot in the third set when de Minaur claimed a double break to leap out to a 3-0 lead but to the credit of the Portuguese world number 103 he broke back and then held serve to trail 3-2.

Seppi on Friday ran through Argentinian Diego Schwartzman, taking control of the semi-final in a first-set tiebreaker before eventually winning 7-6 (7-3) 6-4.

The 34-year-old Seppi, playing in his first decider in more than three years, hasn't won a tournament since 2012.

Sharma prevailed against countrywoman Priscilla Ho 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 in an enthralling contest on the outside courts lasting two hours and nine minutes.

"What happened was, he was disappointed that the Australian Open had decided early in the piece that the bottom half of the draw was going to be played on the first day before people knew who was going to be in the final of Sydney and Auckland".
